Transition of '.pk' domain successfully completed

Pin It RECORDER REPORT LAHORE (July 18 2009): Marking a significant boost in the Internet history of Pakistan, the transition of county code, top level domain of Pakistan ".pk" has been successfully completed. This was revealed in a visit of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Dr Mohammed Yaseen to Lahore office of PKNIC, the ccTLD operator for ".pk" domain, to observe the infrastructure, data center and customer services department, on Friday.

The new authoritative mirror M-2.PKNIC.NET.pk (203.128.7.123) would enable local resolution of ".pk" websites. The successfully implemented root server mirroring for ".pk" has also been tested on global root servers from A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET to M.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. PKNIC representatives apprised the chairman of mirroring techniques and provided some testing on new Domain Name Service (DNS) resolution mechanism of .pk. The PTA chairman was notified that the root server mirroring for ".pk" domain in Pakistan was fully operational.

The PTA chairman, on this occasion deemed the domain a national asset and hoped that enhancement in its services would boost the local content development, subsequently encouraging enterprises to host their web content under ".pk". That would also ensure smooth operations of an important Internet resource, he added. He enlightened that a dedicated team at ICT Directorate, PTA, under his supervision, was working on the project for the improvement of local Internet industry. Formal inauguration of new PKNIC office will be held next month.
