Pin It KARACHI: Cellular phone companies have started charging Rs 10 paisa from Monday on every balance


inquiry through Short Messaging Service (SMS), official sources told. Except Warid, all four cellular phone companies will be charging balance inquiry with 19.5 percent tax on the account of General Sales Tax (GST), a rare and simultaneous attempt of charging money on the free service. All these operators have notified their customers about the imposition of new taxes 30 days prior as per instruction of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. Telecom analysts said that cellular phone companies are looking for phasing out all the free services given to customers in order to generate earnings in the stiff competitive market. They said that the unending price-war among all cellular phone operators have dragged them in the red zone, therefore, they all are seeking to impose charges on additional services. Last year, all cellular phone companies hiked 100 percent charges on call made to its customer services and helpline centres. The operators have increased call charges to helpline or customer services by 50 paisas to Re1 per call particularly for their pre-paid customers, whereas one out of five operators have increased their services call charges for post-paid customers as well. Overall cellular subscribers' base has reached 95.54 million in country. muhammad yasir
