Nokia to offer financial services

Nokia today confirmed its ambition to move into the services sector with the launch of Nokia Money, a mobile financial service that allows consumers with mobile devices to access basic financial services.

Mary McDowell, Nokia's chief development officer, said the world had four billion mobile phones but only 1.6 billion bank accounts.

Nokia plans to roll out the service gradually to selected markets, beginning in early 2010.

"We believe mobile financial services offer a market opportunity with long-term growth potential. In many countries, mobile phone ownership significantly exceeds bank account usage. This suggests that many mobile phone users have very limited or no access to basic financial services," she said.

Nokia has tied up and invested in the US online payments service Obopay. Nokia Money is based on Obopay's mobile payment platform, with unique and newly developed mobile elements. Nokia intends the service to be open and interoperable with other payment services too.

Obopay's prepaid cards are issued by the Bancorp Bank under license from MasterCard International Incorporated. Its partners include Citibank, AT&T, Verizon and Research in Motion (BlackBerry).

Nokia Money will run around the clock and let consumers send money to another person just by using that person's mobile phone number. They can pay merchants for goods and services, pay their utility bills, or recharge their prepaid SIM cards.

Nokia is building a network of Nokia Money agents, where consumers will be able to deposit money or withdraw cash from their accounts.

Nokia's head of corporate business development Teppo Paavola said rural consumers will benefit particularly from money transfers. "For urban consumers used to online services, we are enabling services such as payment of utility bills, purchase of train and movie tickets, top-ups, all through their mobile phones," he said.

The service will be shown for the first time at Nokia World, 2-3 September 2009 in Stuttgart, Germany.

US got 28th rank in Internet speed

Pin It WASHINGTON (August 31 2009): The United States ranks 28th in the world in average Internet connection speed and is

not making significant progress in building a faster network, according to a report released on August 25.

The report by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) said the average download speed in South Korea is 20.4 megabits per second (mbps) - four times faster than the US average of 5.1 mbps. Japan trails South Korea with an average of 15.8 mbps followed by Sweden at 12.8 mbps and the Netherlands at 11.0 mbps, the report said.

It said tests conducted by speedmatters.org found the average US download speed had improved by only nine-tenths of a megabit per second between 2008 and 2009 - from 4.2 mbps to 5.1 mbps. "The US has not made significant improvement in the speeds at which residents connect to the Internet," the report said. "Our nation continues to fall far behind other countries."

"People in Japan can upload a high-definition video in 12 minutes, compared to a gruelling 2.5 hours at the US average upload speed," the report said. It said 18 percent of those who took a US speed test recorded download speeds that were slower than 768 kilobits per second, which does not even qualify as basic broadband, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

Sixty-four percent connected at up to 10 mbps, 19 percent connected at speeds greater than 10 mbps and two percent exceeded 25 mbps.

The US was ranked 20th in broadband penetration in a survey of 58 countries released earlier this year by Boston-based Strategy Analytics. South Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, Denmark and Taiwan were the top five countries listed in terms of access to high-speed Internet.

US President Barack Obama has pledged to put broadband in every home and the FCC has embarked on an ambitious project to bring high-speed Internet access to every corner of the United States. According to the CWA report, the fastest download speeds in the US are in the north-eastern parts of the country while the slowest are in states such as Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Nokia planning to lauch its first-ever mini laptop

Pin It HELSINKI - Finnish telecoms giant Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, announced on Monday it would launch its first-ever mini laptop.

The 'Booklet 3G' will weigh just 1.25 kilos and will measure just two centimetres wide, Nokia said in a statement.

It will use Microsoft's Windows operating system and have a battery life of up to 12 hours, the company added.

The announcement comes at a time when mobile phone manufacturers such as Nokia and its Swedish-Japanese rival Sony Ericsson are facing sliding sales for their handsets.

"A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility," said Kai Oistamo, Nokia's executive vice president for devices.

The current global economic crisis has deterred many customers from buying new phones, while models such as Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry have stolen sales from the established telecom giants.

Nokia said it would announce the price and availability of its new pocket computer in September.

Reduction in telecom taxes plan by PTA

Pin It ISLAMABAD : PTA is taking every measure to ensure previous growth patterns in the industry. Reduction in telecom taxes is one area where PTA is working intensely to ensure that the Telecom users are not over burdened. Today share of telecom sector alone in GDP has increased from 1.8 percent to 2 percent and it is expected that total share of telecom industry in GDP will further rise in the coming years and could reach 3 percent.

The Authority is also working towards introducing new technologies in Pakistan and in this regard PTA plans to introduce much awaited 3G services very soon. It is expected that once the service would be available with all mobile operators it would increase the data usage and more value added services. The state of telecom industry today is portraying a healthy situation. There are total 5 mobile operators, 14 long distance & international, 37 local loop operators and 11 WLL operators working in the country. The overall teledensity in the country has reached 62 percent (May 09).

While curbing the antisocial activities the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in co-operation with all mobile operators introduced SIM verification system, in addition to blocking the unregistered SIMs in use. Similarly the Authority is working in collaboration with LDI operators to curb the grey traffic in the country which is continuously hurting the national exchequer. The Authority has created a Consumer Protection Directorate (CPD) at PTA to in order to redress consumer grievances through a proper channel. These are few important steps that the Authority took during last year to improve the health of sector.

While looking at the grim state of telecom services in AJK especially after the devastating earthquake of October 2005, the cellular mobile operators operating in Pakistan were allowed to provide services in AJK. Later, AJ&K council adopted the Pakistan Telecom Act, 1996 and extended PTA's jurisdiction to AJK and NAs. In response, PTA awarded Cellular Mobile, LDI and Fixed line licenses to operators to provide telecom facilities in AJK and NA in addition to Pakistan.

There are currently 94 million mobile subscribers with mobile penetration reaching 58 percent (May 09). Almost 90 percent of the land area of Pakistan is covered with telecom access. Tariffs of LDI witnessed stability in terms of tariffs reduction. The WLL services are getting popular especially in rural areas and total subscribers of WLL are now 2.6 million. Similarly the fixed line subscribers stand at 3.7 million.

Mobilink rating raised to 'B-' from 'CCC+'

Pin It The Standard and Poor's Ratings Services has raised its long-term corporate credit rating on Pakistan-based wireless service provider, Pakistan Mobile Communications Ltd (Mobilink) to 'B-' from 'CCC+'. Rashid Khan, President & CEO Mobilink said, "despite a very challenging operating environment credit fundamentals of Mobilink have been broadly intact and it has managed to retain trust of international and local investors.

The upgrade in rating reflects an improvement on the operating environment that was weighing negatively on our rating previously. It is heartening to see the positive outlook on Pakistan's macroeconomic situation as we cannot isolate ourselves from the economic environment we operate in. We are also grateful to our parent company Orascom Telecom Holding for their continued financial support that has helped us achieve this improvement in our ratings."

Competing in an aggressive market, Mobilink continues to maintain its leadership position and has added the most number of subscribers in July 2009 as compared to other operators. " "We raised the rating on Mobilink to reflect our opinion of the improvement in its funding profile and Pakistan's macroeconomic situation," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Yasmin Wirjawan. This follows Standard & Poor's decision to raise the long-term sovereign credit ratings on Pakistan (B-/Stable/C).

Nokia unveiled the N900, the company's first Linux phone

After several unofficial leaks, Nokia on Thursday officially unveiled the N900, the company's first Linux phone. It's a good first step to rejuvenate Nokia's smartphone line, but will the N900 have what it takes to go head-to-head with the iPhone and Android Phones?

The Nokia N900 has some powerful guts. The device packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor and has 1GB of memory for running applications. The N900 also features OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration, opening a window of opportunity for high quality mobile games.

The N900 runs on the new Linux-based Maemo 5 software, which Nokia says "complements" other software platforms from the company. Recent rumors had Nokia dropping Symbian in favor of a Linux based platform, which many speculated to be Google's Android.

But the Maemo software is nothing new to Nokia. The company's previous Internet Tablets (three to be exact) also ran on various Maemo versions. Still, the new big thing in the N900 is phone capability, which the older tablets were lacking. The N900 serves as a quad-band GSM/EDGE, 900/1700/2100MHz UMTS/HSPA phone.

The N900 does handle connectivity well: next to the GSM and HSPA antennas, the new device features WiFi, GPS/A-GPS, an FM transmitter, Bluetooth 2.1, and TV-out capabilities. Not too shabby, considering it also comes with 32GB of on-board storage, expandable up to 48GB via micro SD cards.

Just like the iPhone, the N900 has a 3.5-inch display, but unlike Apple's phone, it doesn't have a capacitive screen, meaning that more pressure is required for the display to acknowledge your commands. On the upside, the N900 has a higher-resolution display (800x480 pixel), placing it among other high-res screen phones such as the HTC Touch Pro 2 or the Samsung Omnia II (see comparison charts).

The Nokia N900 also promises desktop-grade Web browsing, with the bundled Mozilla-based browser, which happily has Adobe Flash 9.4 support. In comparison, there's no word of Flash coming on the iPhone. Flash support is on the way for Google Android and BlackBerry phones, (except the HTC Hero, which already has full support).

Nokia's N900 features a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual-LED flash. By comparison, the iPhone 3GS has a 3-megapixel camera and no flash. The Android-based HTC Hero has a 5-megapixel camera, but no flash. The Palm Pre on the other hand, has 3-megapixel camera with LED flash.

The Nokia N900 has also another advantage -- a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, scoring along the Palm Pre, the Nokia N97 and the HTC Touch Pro 2 in this category. There are also a couple of Android-based Motorola phones coming out next month, which will feature a full QWERTY keyboard.

But most likely, the software on board of the Nokia N900 will decide the phone's faith. The Maemo 5 operating system looks promising in early previews, but the apparent lack of an application store could handicap the device prematurely. And last, but not least, Nokia said the N900 will cost just over $700 (unsubsidized and unlocked), so if T-Mobile or AT&T decide to carry the N900, hopefully a hefty subsidy will be put in place.

PTA Issues Regulations for Unsolicited and Obnoxious Communications

Pin It Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), has promulgated new regulations namely “Protection from Spam, Unsolicited, Fraudulent and Obnoxious Communication Regulations, 2009” to protect the consumer interests as mandated under the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act 1996.The objective of these regulations is to protect telecom consumers from spam, fraudulent, unsolicited and obnoxious communications including calls and SMS.

These regulations required all the telecom operators to setup standard operating procedures (SOPs) for controlling SPAMs, fraudulent, unsolicited and obnoxious communications, in accordance with the given timeframe. Under these regulations, telecom operators will establish procedures for blacklisting of subscribers whose subscription has been terminated on such fraudulent activities within sixty days from the date of gazette notification of these regulations.

They will also establish “Do Not Call Register” (DNCR) within ninety working days from the date of gazette notification of these regulations for avoidance of receiving unnecessary and unwanted calls by the subscribers from telemarketers. Moreover, a round the clock complaint handling mechanism in order to facilitate the consumers will also be established by the telecom operators. Launching of media campaign in electronic and print media to educate subscribers and general public of the available preventive and subsequent complaint mechanism for handling spamming, unsolicited, fraudulent and obnoxious communications has also been made compulsory for the telecom operators in the said regulations.

Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that PTA had been working on these regulations since long. A consultation paper on spam, unsolicited and obnoxious calls was issued to take all the stakeholders onboard and feedback received from them was incorporated in these regulations.

It may be noted that the Authority has already promulgated the Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations, 2009 in March, 2009.The notification of the Protection from Spam, Unsolicited, Fraudulent and Obnoxious Communication Regulations, 2009 is yet another milestone achieved by the telecom regulator to safeguard the consumer rights and interests. It is expected that, with the promulgation of these regulations telecom consumers may approach telecom operators for deterrence from unwanted, undesired and uncalled for communication and operators are required to facilitate the consumers under these regulations.

The federal government has so far failed to appoint any suitable minister for IT and Telecom

Pin It LAHORE: The federal government has so far failed to appoint any suitable minister for IT and Telecom - one of the most important sectors of economy.

The telecom sector has been the major driver of economic growth for the last five years and has contributed over Rs300 billion to the national exchequer from 2005-06 to 2007-08. Various operators have invested over $8.8 billion in telecom infrastructure during the same period.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in telecommunications stood at around $5.6 billion, which on average was over 30 per cent of the total FDI between fiscal year 2005-06 and 2007-08.

The telecom operators say that on the one hand the government has a huge army of ministers looking after every small department and at the same time it has failed to assign the duty of IT and telecommunications to any one.

A senior official of a cell phone company said the IT and telecom sector has already been facing the heat in the recent economic recession. Margins have already evaporated and high inflation has reduced gross spending on communications. Instead of facilitating foreign investors through policy decisions, the government has worsened the situation through high taxes.

He pointed out that the telecommunication policy was developed when the telecom sector was de-regularised to facilitate new operators. The policy has lived past its five-year term but work has not been initiated for the next policy.

Major policy decisions necessary for the sector’s growth have been delayed for months due to the absence of the sector’s representation in policymaking bodies like the cabinet. Even petty matters that demand government’s intervention take months for resolution, he added.

Similarly, Adnan Bin Riaz, a software house owner developing software for export only, said in this age of information technology strong telecommunication system was the backbone of entire national development and growth.

He was of the view that the global village concept that has been emerged during the last decade has only been materialized once the traditional barriers in trade and economics have been shattered by the modern communication systems.

He further said besides this strong telecommunication system is the backbone of national defense system which has been providing connectivity to all the strategic national institutions but in the absence of sector representative in government creates many hurdles in taking small decisions.

The telecom sector experts said the foreign investors were facing a lot of problems due to lack of ownership at the government level and a lot of crisis have already started raising heads in this sector due to the step motherly attitude of the government. The industry has witnessed one of the highest workforce layoffs in recent days where in some of the countries have reduced there workforce by up to 50 per cent. The cellular mobile operators, LDI’s and PSTN service providers all in sheer frustration are looking for avenues to pull their investments from Pakistan. They feared that if the foreign investments would be started fly out from Pakistan then the situation would be very difficult for the foreign investment in the country. They pointed out that it was time that government must discontinue its lay back approach and appoint a strong minister to safeguard the sector interests in national policy making. The declining profitability and customer base across the board in the telecommunication sector is a clear indicator that the sector is on the verge of a major crisis. The sector demands immediate government attention for the safeguard of all the stakeholders through major policy initiatives, which will not be possible in the total absence of ownership at the top level.

Telenor Pakistan chosen as 'most preferred employer'

Pin It ISLAMABAD: A recent survey has chosen a leading telecom company as "the most preferred employer" for their Human Resource (HR) practices in Pakistan. The survey was conducted by ROZEE.PK, Pakistan's online recruitment company, with the objective to connect talent with opportunity. The survey chose Telenor Pakistan as the most preferred employer of the country.

As a part of their research program, ROZEE.PK developed a poll for the visitors and the registrants of the web site about their perception of top ten HR brands of Pakistan from 2005 to 2009.

Country Consultant, Google Pakistan, Badar Khushnood, Manager HR, United Bank Limited Asma Ahmed, Director, Head of HR Pakistan Tobacco Company LTd., Q M Shahed, Manager HR Development TCS, Sajid Mehmood Khan are some of the best Human Resource specialists who served on the Advisory Board for the survey.

Vice President Human Capital Division Telenor Pakistan Nayab Baig told APP that Telenor Pakistan was pleased with the results of the Top Employers survey conducted by Rozee.PK. 'We appreciate the initiative and believe that such surveys help to create an in-depth understanding of our culture, environment and perception of HR practices in the market. Senate body on IT for improvement in service quality…

Pin It Expressing its concern over deteriorating standards and poor quality service of a number of telecom companies, the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications has called for protection of rights of the consumers.

“Growth of telecom sector is important, but consume satisfaction is more important”, it added. The Committee, which at the Parliament House Monday under the Chairmanship of Senator Muhammad Idrees Khan Safi, observed that the telecom companies are making windfall profits but paying little attention to improving service quality especially in the rural and far flung areas of the country. As a result, it said people are facing a lot of difficulties.

It directed the PTA to play its regulatory role forcefully, and with conviction to address the outstanding issues especially those relating to service quality. The Committee also instructed that SIM registration/verification process must be carried out vigilantly to avoid any misuse.

The Committee also held the view that the PTCL ever since its privatisation, by and large, has been unable to come up to the expectations of the people and the service quality is leaving much to be desired. It was also observed that the provincial/regional job quota requirements enforced by the government are also not being complied with. The Committee expressed its concern over large scale sacking of trained employees including engineers having more than 20 years of service, and attributed this trend to falling standards of service. Earlier, the Committee was given a detailed briefing on the budget of all the relating organisations of telecommunications i.e.

Mobile companies/PTCL etc., budget of all the relating organisations of Information Technology and the policy of SIM registration process. Secretary IT Ministry requested the Senate Body to extend its support to the Ministry so that it must have a regular budget instead of project based budget for its better performance as a public sector entity. He said that it has a mandate to convert present mode of government into E-mode, but does not have the capacity due to various limitations. The meeting was attended among others by Senators Syed Fisal Raza Abidi, Muhammad Azam Khan Swati, Muhammad Zahid Khan, Pervaiz Rashid and Fauzia Fakhar-uz-Zaman; besides IT secretary and senior officials of the ministry.

The Internet users have reached nearly four million in the country ...

Pin It KARACHI: The Internet users have reached nearly four million in the country amid slight growth witnessed in the base of Direct Subscriber Line (DSL) by the end of March 2009, said Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The latest statistics released by PTA reflected only two percent growth in DSL users during the January to March 2009 as compared with last quarter of the current fiscal year. The overall DSL subscriber stood at 272,626 in the country despite emergence of good number of operators in the sector. However, the dial-up connection growth remained stagnant at 3.7 million users, which has not shown any growth since July 2008.

Sector people said that broadband connections would witness healthy growth through DSL and Wimax services because of their highly advanced technology and easy connection availability. On the other hand, the dial-up connection is likely to lose its market share in the future. They pointed out that falling prices of broadband services will increase the number of its subscribers rapidly, while a significant number of dial-up internet connection will remain attractive for users owing to its lowest service charges. Focusing on commercial sector, operators are offering broadband services through multiple technologies such as Direct Subscribers Line (DSL), Cable, Fiber To The Home (FTTH) Hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (Wimax). DSL holds the lion share of 59 percent in the overall broadband users’ market led by Wimax with 20 percent at the end of 2008, PTA report says.

The rapid growth in the proliferation of broadband services has been estimated to widen its nationwide users’ base possibly by five million in next couple of years. The emergence of one after another broadband operators in the Pakistani market has stirred competition at the very initial stage among.
