Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) alongwith Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) recently conducted an extensive survey in Pakistan and AJ&K with the help of special equipment to check the emission of power level from transmitters and receivers of Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs)/Towers installed by cellular mobile companies. The survey was conducted at Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Sibi, Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Results show that the power level of BTSs is below the prescribed danger limits and in line with the policy directives of Ministry of IT & Telecom, World Health Organization (WHO) and International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) guidelines. The impression, therefore, regarding hazardous effects on health of humans by radiation from the towers is incorrect as towers are installed and are working within the specified parameters defined by the regulator as well as the international bodies monitoring the issue.

This exercise was undertaken on the directions of Chairman PTA, Dr. Mohammed Yaseen. PTA is cognizant of this issue as it directly relates to the health of general public. It would continuously monitor the emissions of radiations from towers to ensure that specific standards are met and would keep the public informed

Speaking at the launch of International Home Transfer, the Chief Executive Officer Tameer Microfinance Bank, Nadeem Hussain said, “The regular stream of new additions in the easypaisa portfolio displays regulators confidence in the reliability and performance of the solution. This new service offers all the benefits of any conventional remittance service. We are making quick progress towards offering new services providing additional benefits to the customers.

The senders of funds from abroad can transfer the money through the wide network of Xpress agents present in more than 80 countries including United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Kingdom. A transaction ID will be generated on sending the amount which, along with the CNIC, are required to claim the funds through all Telenor Pakistan Sale & Service Centers, Franchises and Tameer Microfinance Bank outlets. International remittances can play a valuable role in providing foreign exchange, but more importantly, also offer significant potential to support incomes of poor and vulnerable groups. Tameer Bank has been given a member status of Pakistan Remittances Initiative (PRI). PRI is a joint initiative of State Bank of Pakistan, Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Ministry of Finance aimed at increasing the inflow of remittances through legal channels. Keeping in mind the importance of international remittances to Pakistan’s economy, the International Home Transfer service is being offered without any charges.

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time. Given that most of us don’t spend all day in front of our computers, we thought, “wouldn’t it be nice if you could call people directly on their phones?”

Starting today, you can call any phone right from Gmail

Calls to the U.S. and Canada will be free for at least the rest of the year and calls to other countries will be billed at our very low rates. We worked hard to make these rates really cheap (
see comparison table) with calls to the U.K., France, Germany, China, Japan—and many more countries—for as little as $0.02 per minute.

We’ve been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant, to placing a call when you’re in an area with bad reception.

If you have a Google Voice phone number, calls made from Gmail will display this number as the outbound caller ID. And if you decide to, you can receive calls made to this number right inside Gmail (
see instructions).

We’re rolling out this feature to U.S. based Gmail users over the next few days, so you’ll be ready to get started once “Call Phones” shows up in your chat list (you will need to install the
voice and video plug-in if you haven’t already). If you’re not a U.S. based user—or if you’re using Google Apps for your school or business—then you won’t see it quite yet. We’re working on making this available more broadly—so stay tuned!

The money will be donated through SOS Children’s Village which will help build a community school in Kasur, which is an impoverished area near Lahore and in acute need of development. This will give the less fortunate children a have a chance for a better tomorrow. Samsung had initiated a similar campaign in 2009, and the funds from it had been utilized in making computer labs for SOS Children’s Village Dodhial.

Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Telecom Industry has started “1234” SMS Service to supplement the efforts of the Government in its rescue and rehabilitation efforts for the flood affectees across the country. The short code “1234” has been activated from all cellular mobile operators platforms. SMS can be sent to “1234” by writing “Fund” which will be charged @Rs.10/- excluding taxes for contributing to “Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010” for flood affected people.

The amount collected by generating these SMSs would be deposited with “Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010”, for which a special account has been created in National Bank of Pakistan (Account No.898989).

PTA has appealed to the public to send maximum number of SMSs to help their affected brethren in this hour of need.

Islamabad: The catastrophe of the recent heavy rains and floods has seriously affected the infrastructure of the telecommunication services in Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa (KP).

The areas worst affected as far as the telecommunication infrastructure is concerned includes Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsada, Mardan, Swabi, Swat, Dir, Malakand, Kohat, Jahangira, D. I. Khan and Timergara.

The main reason behind this was the fiber optic cut of M/S PTCL and M/S Wateen Telecom between Kohat – Bannu, Lawrancepur – Mardan, Peshawar – Kohat, Bannu – Karak, D. I. Khan – Shehbaz Khel, Taxila – Nowshera, Abbotabad – Taxila and Peshawar – Mardan sections. Due to this a total of 53 Base Stations Controllers (BSCs) and 2703 Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been affected at Peshawar, Nowshera, Dir, Mardan, Charsada, Swabi, Jahangira, Swat, Bara, Timergara, Mingora, Bannu, Kohat, D. I. Khan, Kurram Agency and Khyber Agency.

Though the restoration process of services was a gigantic task in the wake of heavy floods and access issues in the affected areas, however, the backbone service providers and mobile operators, in compliance with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s instructions, made their utmost efforts and chalked out scurry plans. Eventually, a total of 43 BSCs and 2239 BTSs have been restored so far. Remaining sites are being accessed by the technical teams and shall be restored as soon as possible.

In this regard, Director General (Enforcement), PTA, Mr Yawar Yasin visited the Zonal Office Peshawar where all service providers informed about the status of current telecommunication infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtoon Khawa and have also shared the future course of actions for repair of the damaged sites. After having seen the ground situation and getting update from all telecom service providers, DG (Enforcement) directed them to complete the remaining repair work at the earliest.
