PTA and UET Taxila Sign MOU for Mutual Cooperation
Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Taxila have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote telecom related research that would be beneficial for both the organizations, the telecom industry as well as for the country. This MoU would also boost mutual cooperation in the relevant fields and would enhance the industry academia linkage. Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen and Vice Chancellor UET Professor Dr. Muhammed Abbas Choudhary were present while representatives of PTA and UET signed the MoU in a ceremony held at UET today. This MoU would be valid for (five) 5 years and would be renewed on completion.
Main objectives of this collaboration are to support research activities and to equip future leadership with theoretical and practical training in policy and regulatory issues of telecom sector. It is expected that the related organizations would benefit from this collaboration as young experts would be conducting research in the relevant fields of telecom with guidance of the faculty and PTA.
On this occasion, Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammed Yaseen said that PTA would provide data on telecom sector and expertise to UET Taxila, reciprocally the University would encourage its students to undertake research in different areas of telecom sector. He said that under the MoU, PTA would help UET in identification of research areas. Similarly, UET would cooperate with PTA on different issues of trade, business and economy related to telecom sector. The VC said that we are looking for possibility to set up a Chair on Telecommunications at UET. We have also plans to start masters and doctorate programmes in telecom regulations. We want to establish an institution for telecom research as well, he added.
This is the third MoU signed between PTA and any university. Similar understanding exists with COMSATS and NUST. PTA has been working continuously towards encouragement of research activities in telecom sector. Being an academia friendly organization it has taken initiatives to establish strong linkages with educational institutions for the promotion of telecom research. Research on regulatory issues, challenges and transfer of new technologies in local sector is likely to help the regulator and the policy makers. To this end PTA has taken significant steps that have received an positive response from all the stakeholders. These initiatives include PTA Gold Medal Scheme, Essay Competition on World Telecom Day and cash prizes for best research project competition and SMS-based Information System for educational institutions.

INTEL and Government of Punjab signed MOU to promote ICT
KARACHI (April 30 2010): Intel Pakistan Corporation under the Intel Education Initiative has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with School Education Department, Government of Punjab to accelerate the integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in the education system of the province.
Intel aims at training teachers on ICT via the Intel Teach Programme and educating them on modern teaching methodologies, which would enhance student's 21st century skills. The government has taken the responsibility for all cost of implementation to support this strategic partnership through its own sources along with sponsorship from other donor agencies working for the common cause of education, science and innovation.
Intel will render ICT training to all government teachers to incorporate the Intel Teach curriculum in the education system. Intel aims at educating 29,000 IT and subject teachers over a period of three years. Islamabad: The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) and Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) have entered into a landmark agreement at Islamabad for the provisioning of 10 Gigabit Premium Internet Bandwidth Connectivity. This is the largest Internet Backbone Connectivity ever acquired by any organization in Pakistan.
PTCL is the main provider of premium internet bandwidth to the HEC who in turn provides the internet services to the universities alongwith other IP facilities including video conferencing, digital libraries and access to International Education & Research Networks.
The contract is an integral component of Pakistan Education & Research Network-2 (PERN-2) Project which was initiated by HEC to provide high speed connectivity to the universities and institutes of higher learning across the country, forming the national research and education network of Pakistan. PERN2 also provides internet access to the students and research scholars of the universities in Pakistan through state of the art access technologies.
On the occasion, Dr. Sohail Naqvi, Executive Director of HEC said “The PERN-2 project upon completion will bring HEC at par with any international organization and will give access to the internet cloud, world wide education & research networks, digital libraries within/outside Pakistan, distance learning/video conferencing, unified communication boosting the sharing of knowledge with international students, scholars and knowledge resources”.Walid Irhaid, President and CEO, PTCL, added that “PTCL has offered this premium IP transit facility keeping in view of its corporate social responsibilities to the education sector of the country. KARACHI :Intel Pakistan recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a consortium partner in Pre-Step (the pre-service teacher education programme). The agreement has been made to launch a technology programme in Government Colleges of Pakistan with a vision to improve the basic education by strengthening teachers training institutes.
Pre-Step is a five-year, national programme led by the Academy for Educational Development (AED), with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The programme is designed to improve the quality of basic education in Pakistan by improving teacher preparation practices and strengthening the capacity of up to 75 teachers training institutes and 15 universities. This programme will also provide an opportunity for teacher educators to learn about, practice and make plans to use active teaching approaches.-PR

LAHORE (November 20 2009): Punjab University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Warid Telecom under which PU officials will get 35 percent discount and students will get 20 percent discount in the monthly line rent of post-paid Warid connections.

ISLAMABAD: The National Vocational and Technical Education Commission (NAVTEC) has trained 100,000 youth during the last 2 years in various technical disciplines for useful trades under the President's "Funni Maharat Programmes" and Prime Minister's "Hunarmand Programme".The programmes trained the youth in collaboration with leading training institutes in public and private sectors and for the first time in nation's history, the NAVTEC has developed National Skills Strategy 2009-2013 with the vision of 'Skills for Employability for All'.These views were expressed by Executive Director NAVTEC, Athar Tahir regarding the workshop of Indonesia-Pakistan Calligraphy and Batik here at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA). ISLAMABAD : The Pakistan Computer Association (PCA) has decided to organise an extensive training program from August 17 to provide a unique opportunity to IT professionals and computer vendors for learning and understanding the Open Source Operating Systems (OS OS).According to an announcement of the Association here on Sunday, the stakeholders would be given detailed orientation sessions about this operating system, which would be available almost free of cost to the stakeholders, ending the monopoly of expensive software in the country. This would be first of its kind of training program where IT experts and other stakeholders would be provided an opportunity to learn about low cost operating system helpful in Pakistan business environment and working conditions of local corporate culture. The PCA would not charge any cost of training, but would provide literature, data and training advice from national and international experts to learn about the Open Source Operating Systems (OS OS).The training will help the IT professionals to learn how to operate state-of-the-art software technology and launch the same in Pakistan effectively. KARACHI (April 16 2009): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that present government is out to completely benefit from Information technology, particularly in the provincial offices of Sindh Government. "The Provincial Information Technology department should accelerate the work in this regard", he said at a briefing given to him on the performance of Provincial IT department at Chief Minister House.
Qaim Ali Shah pointed out that present is the century of science and development while IT has brought revolution in every era of life. He recalled that Benazir always used to assert on taking advantage of Information Technology. He called for computerising the entire record of Board of Revenue while all the departments be connected to each other gradually through computer so that public is facilitated in the resolution of their problems.
On the occasion IT Minister Raza Haroon and Secretary IT Rauf Farooqui in a detail briefing informed the Chief Minister that the mission before the department was to connect all the departments of Sindh government through IT so that people are served in a better and transparent manner. It was informed that Sindh Governments first phase of e-government pilot project has been started under which e-governance will be introduced in five departments of Finance, Services, General Administration, Co-ordination, Planning and Development, Health and Education.
The Chief Minister was told that Provincial Secretariats 1, 2 and 6 buildings and the Barracks of Finance department have been inter-linked through optic fibre. It was pointed out in the briefing that IT department has connected all the projects under e-government pilot project with software development.
It was informed that IT projects include establishment of IT centres, IT training for Sindh Government employees, IT awareness centres for people in backward areas, setting of provincial portal, introduction of IT for district administrations, establishment of IT resource and rural community internet centre and internet services for Sindh Government.
The Chief Minister was also informed about e-government project for Sukkur, call centres for training of unemployed graduates and under-graduates, video conferencing system in Sindh, development of HRM system for Sindh government and computerising the offices of Advocate General Sindh. The meeting was told about hospital management information system for Civil Hospital, Sindh governments participation in GIS programme on Presidents directive and establishment of 100 laboratories in Sindhs government, high schools, higher secondary schools and inter colleges.
The future programme were listed as data center for Sindh Government, computer learning centres, Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Youth Development programme (Phase-II), e-learning system, tele-medicine system for Sindh, establishment of Shaheed Bhutto IT and Media City in Karachi.
Establishment of complaint cell management system in the Chief Ministers Secretariat, establishment of IT training center for Sindh Government, development of IT Human Resource at high school and college level and establishment of IT University. The Chief Minister appreciated the plans and said that the projects initiated should be expeditiously completed while better planning be chalked out for new ones.

Telenor conducted its Career Management Workshop on April 1 at the College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, NUST. Telenor Pakistan visited the NUST Main Campus on Tuesday and then conducted its workshop at the College of E&ME the other day.
The lead speaker of the workshop was Mr. Faraz Ahmed, who is an Assistant Manager in Recruitment. He was a wonderful person who conducted the session in a great way.
After a brief personal introduction, we were introduced to the other employees of Telenor who had come as well. Mr. Nasir was serving as an assistant and a helper while Mr. Salman was present as an alumnus of the institute.
Mr. Salman narrated his experiences at the institute and his career path. He was a Mechanical Engineer by education who later pursued business studies. He joined in Telenor Pakistan in January, 2008 and was serving as an acting director in corporate affairs.
As the workshop started, an introduction video highlighted the career opportunities and Telenor’s hiring program and procedure. It also highlighted the working environment of the company.
The speakers explained their company’s “Open space environment” and the students were impressed by their policy and philosophy. The flexibility of the working environment was appreciated by everyone.
An introduction to Telenor highlighted the company’s egalitarian policies and employees lifecycle engagements. The company’s organizational structure and hiring and assessment procedures were also explained.
Mr. Faraz then went to explain the “Student excellence program”. He also introduced the company’s new Summer Internship Program and emphasized on the large number of internships available and learning opportunities. (80 internships in technical this summer)
He then started the Career Management Workshop formally. The Workshop was to focus on the Resume making process and the interview procedure.
He asked the students to be prepared for Phase 1 of the recruitment. He asked them to organize themselves for interviews even before they start looking for employers. He asked them to list down their “SWOT: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats”. He asked them to find a direction for themselves and define an area of interest and be passionate about it.
He then mentioned the do’s and don’ts of CVs with sample CVs, both papers ones and Online CVs.
The workshop then progressed to the interview stage that is Phase 2. He introduced the students to the interview process and 4A’s to ace. He explained the points in detail with examples and personal experiences. They were Audible, Authority, Appeal and Aware . He asked the students to show integrity and being comfortable with themselves and don’t fake anything.
After going through this process in detail, he came to Phase 3 i.e. post interview. He explained the nature of further interviews and the best way to end an interview.
At the end of the workshop, using survey forms distributed throughout the participants, one lucky person won an iPod. The speaker asked various questions from the crowd, and I was lucky enough to nail one and won myself an “I Love Telenor” mug which is pictured here.
Overall the workshop was a very nice experience and helped me get a detailed introduction to the company. The HR people from Telenor did a wonderful job with this workshop.
