World's fastest internet links in Japan and South Korea:Survey Report

Pin It TOKYO:East Asian countries led by South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan are the best wired in the world with the highest number of fast broadband connections to the Internet, a recent report has found.

South Korea boasts the world's highest average connection speed at 14.6 Megabytes per second (Mbps) and also has six of Asia's 10 cities with the fastest link-ups, all with average speeds above 15 Mbps.

Japan had the second highest average connection speed of 7.9 Mbps, followed by the Chinese territory of Hong Kong with 7.6 Mbps, said the report by US-based network provider Akamai Technologies.

The other countries in the top ten are Romania, followed by Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark and the Czech Republic, with the United States at 18th place, with an average speed of 3.9 Mbps.

The survey classifies "broadband" connections as those of two Mbps or more, and "high broadband" as five Mbps or over, while link-ups at 20 Mbps and better were categorised as "extremely high speed connectivity."

In South Korea, 74 percent of connections were "high broadband," the world's top rate, while the figure was 60 percent in Japan, followed by Hong Kong with 46 percent, said the report. The United States came 12th, with just 24 percent of its connections at five Mbps or more. World-wide, the high broadband percentage was 19 percent.

Growing demand for online high-definition video content is driving demand for faster connections, said Akamai's 'State of the Internet' report for the third quarter of 2009.

"As the quantity of HD-quality media increases over time and the consumption of that media increases, end users are likely to require ever-increasing amounts of bandwidth," the report said.

China is a vital market for Microsoft's Web search business...Microsoft

Pin It SHANGHAI (December 30 2009): China is a vital market for Microsoft's Web search business, as it chases leaders Baidu Inc and Google in the world's biggest Internet market, the world's largest software maker said. Since launching its English-language Bing search site in June, Microsoft has been gaining steady share in the United States, with 10.3 percent in November versus 17.5 percent for Yahoo and 65.6 percent for dominant player Google, according to comScore.

Microsoft hopes to get off to a similar fast start with its Chinese-language Bing site, which is still in its beta phase following a low-key launch in June. "Microsoft is committed to the China market and the search market in China is the most important strategic market for Microsoft," the company said on Tuesday in emailed responses to questions from Reuters. China's Internet market is a hot spot for global search companies looking to expand overseas, but localisation issues and tough domestic competition have made it tough to crack for global titans such as Yahoo, eBay and Amazon.

Wateen strengthens commitment to telecom infrastructure …

Pin It KARACHI (April 25 2009): Pakistan's telecom industry continues to take positive steps towards the development of telecom infrastructure in the country. The massive boom for the mobile phone segment of telecom industry has provided the momentum for expansion and development in other segments of telecom as well, especially in the rural areas of Pakistan.

The Universal Service Fund (USF) from Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) is providing the impetus for development in under-served areas and Wateen's commitment to alleviate the digital divide between the urban and rural population is always one step ahead of its competition to meet such challenges.

An Optical Fiber network spanning more than 10,000 kilometres across all the four provinces of Pakistan supported by the largest country wide WiMAX broadband network and the biggest satellite services client base, Wateen was a natural choice to support such initiatives from USF.

It is akin to Wateen's vision to contribute towards the development of our great country, since Wateen's corporate culture is to value people, more than products or profits. With this spirit, Wateen participated in the USF bidding process and was awarded the contract for:

1. Optical Fiber network spanning 704km in rural Sindh covering all districts in the province. This is in addition to the already deployed optical fiber network of over 1,000km in the province. This project will be completed by June 2010.

2. Broadband Wireless network deployment in districts of Sargodha. This project will be completed by December 2009. 3. Deployment of a 840km long optical fiber network in the province of Balochistan.
