Huawei Likely to Fire 400 Employees

There is a strong rumor in market that Huawei Pakistan is going to fire as many as 400 employees in coming month.

We were told that job cut is due to delay in 3G and increasing operating expenses. Huawei had invested heavily for 3G that was expected earlier this year. However, 3G’s speculated delay that may turn out to be longer than couple of quarters, is apparently the root cause of this speculated lay off.

On other hands, multiple inside sources from
Ufone have confirmed us that distance between Huawei and Ufone is increasing due to variety of reasons. Reportedly, the contract between Ufone and Huawei may not last long as the differences have reached a point of no return.

When contacted senior spokesman of Huawei Pakistan, he did not respond to any question and said that he is in a meeting in Lahore. Later on my repeated tries to establish communication with him didn’t succeed. At last I left him an SMS that he can contact me back regarding said query, which he has not responded till now.

Update: Huawei Spokesman just called me and said that in this tough time of recession, everyone including USA, UAE and global markets are shedding their work force; furthermore, projects with Ufone have been completed - now if Ufone is not expanding its network than what can we do?

On other hands, when we contacted Ufone’s spokesman, he said that he is ignorant of termination of contract between Ufone and Huawei– “company may not make it public, even if it is the case”, added Ufone’s spokesman.

Update (Feb 26th, 6:20 PM): Ufone’s spokesman just called me recorded his viewpoint as following

“Ufone has strong working relation with Huawei Pakistan, and we are as close with Huawei as before”

Reportedly a short listed list of employees has been sent to China for approval as all operations in Pakistan are controled by Huawei Headquarter.

In any case, Huawei Employees who were associated with Ufone project should not expect their best time ahaed.

PTCL wins contract for new ISE building …

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Company (PTCL) would provide all communication facilities in the new building of Islamabad Stock Exchange (ISE) including voice data and an agreement is likely to be signed within two days.

A high-level delegation of PTCL, led by its Senior Executive Vice President Naveed Saeed, held a meeting with the Managing Director Aftab Chaudhry, ISE during its visit.

Aftab on the occasion said that a number of companies have been contacted to provide their services to ISE but the Board of Directors after thorough consultation decided to award the contract to PTCL, as it is not only a big company but providing quality services.

After interlinking Islamabad and Lahore Stock Exchanges, better results were produced, he added. Naveed Saeed said that the PTCL is adopting new research activities aimed at meeting the challenges of modern world and to ensure all facilities to its consumers.

General Manager Corporate, Zahid Mehmood while giving briefing regarding the project said that fibre, copper and wireless would be used in the proposed service and there would be zero chances of service disruption.

Microsoft not to ask for refund from laid-off workers…

IN today’s ear, efficient and advanced telecommunication system / networks are indispensable for the socio-economic development of any State. Additionally, if such systems/ networks are maintained under proper governmental checks for authenticity of user’s data, it will further help in eradicating crimes from the society thus benefiting society and the government.

During last few years, Pakistan has seen unprecedented developments in telecommunication sector, particularly mobile telephony that is evident from the mind-boggling 90 million mobile connections in a country of around 160 million people. The growth was so phenomenal and overwhelming that the mobile companies, despite elaborated Rules, Regulations and clear instructions by the PTA, regarding sale of SIMs, did not care to control their sale chain and failed in acquisition of correct data of their users. In order to curb the sale of SIMs without proper verification of consumer’s antecedents, PTA adopted number of measures.

PTA being a watch dog realizing the situation, decided to develop a mechanism to curb the sale of unregistered SIMs. After having series of consultations with Law Enforcement Agencies and Operators, PTA came up with the new procedure of sale of non-active SIMs. As per new procedure, mobile service agreement form (CSAF). The SIM is then activated after verification of user data from the NADRA data base. Although the SIMs are non-active but the purchasers are able to dial 789 for activation of new SIM. Upon successful confirmation of few queries by the call centre representative, the SIM is activated within 24 hours.

The new regime adopted by the PTA would make it difficult for outlaws, unscrupulous elements to buy new SIM without legal documents. If followed in letter and spirit, the new regime would improve the user’s data and greatly discourage misuse of the telecom facilities. This will create an environment of trust peace of mind, a prosperous society and effective communication while also helping the Government in achieving their different objectives.

The Regulator, since implementation of the new regime on February 1, 2009, is doing its best by ensuring sale of SIMs as per the regime. However, it may not be possible without support of our citizens.

Therefore, PTA urges the citizens to fulfill their obligation for making our society an exemplary one. Your information about the franchisees and retailers those are involved in the sale of SIMs without obtaining complete antecedents of purchasers would help PTA and government controlling the unlawful use of mobile facilities and ultimately secure ourselves and our society.

Warid...Life ka network or dead network

By Sohaib hassan

Today we saw that telecommunication companies offering various types of offer which include lowest call rates or different types of services specially the last month and this month is totally dedicated to the advertising campaign e.g, Ufone was playing with marketing tools, Zong had also got new rates offer, Mobilink(Jazz) was also busy in improving courage and call rates and also advertising their offers. Telenor launched Persona with new services. That was quiet a busy month but if we realize that someone is very silent who was that...................

It was a warid telecom what they are thinking i don't know but may be they have some marketing strategies or some thing else but inspite of all things the first thing for the company was the confidence and satisfaction of their customers, No one wanted to shake the satisfation of their customers but Warid got a great heart and ignorance ability they didn't offering any services in last two months. But they still have decent customers and ranking which is very strange.

One thing is also very noticible that warid was always very weak if we came to media advertising specially in sindh but any how Warid telecom is a one of the great and growing Networks in Pakistan.

Mobilink Sheds its 200 Employees

Reportedly, Mobilink had laid-off its 200 employees, mainly from administration and security departments, throughout the country. These contract based employees were given their termination letters with immediate effect.

Inside source at Mobilink revealed us that Mobilink Management had further plans to lay-off its employees from other departments as well; however the idea has been put on hold due to a case filed by terminated employees against Mobilink - in which CEO Mobilink, Head HR and Chairman PTA were held respondents in the court.

As per another rumor, Mobilink has plans to cut down further work force on March 7th, 2009. Furthermore, Mobilink employees may miss their bonuses this year, as it was clearly communicated by Rashid Khan, CEO, Mobilink during his visit to Lahore (during last week). A mobilink source, who was part of that meeting, confirmed us that Mr. Khan said we should worry about securing our jobs instead of looking for bonuses.

Orascom Decides to Sell LinkDotNet

Orascom has finally announced its intention to sell its internet arm, LINKdotNet to Mobinil - an Egyptian Company for Mobile Services. The offer was approved by the ECMS Board of Directors on February 20, 2009.

This sellout of Link Dot Net will include internet operations in all countries including Pakistan, where Link Dot Net is operating.

Mobinil is the largest operator in the market, and according to figures from the Mobile World database, has a market share of around 48%.

Link Dot Net Pakistan will also go with LinkDotNet global entity, meaning that Link Dot Net Pakistan will be controlled by Mobinill after this sale-out.

When speaking with a top level official at Link Dot Net (Pakistan), he confirmed us that the evaluation is under process and Link Dot Net Pakistan will be handed over to Mobinil if deal gets matured.

It merits mentioning here that Pakistan Mobile Communication Limited (PMCL) had requested Pakistan Telecommunication Limited to transfer licenses of its affiliated companies that includes, Dancom Online, World Online, Link Direct, Mobilink, Intouch etc. to their respective individual licenses.

We are still waiting for any announcment regarding speculated sale out of Mobilink’s 26 percent shares!

Telenor Plans to Rely on MNP

By Haseeb CH

Reportedly, Telenor Pakistan has initiated this campaign in far flung but populous cities of Pakistan, such as Rahim Yar Khan, which is located at the junction of Punjab and Sindh. By the way, Rahim Yar Khan is always considered as the hotspot of many cellular campaigns. Now let me share a NEW SENSE OF COMPETITION initiated by Telenor in this City.

Telenor Pakistan has decided to launch its Mobile Number Portability Campaign in a new way from Rahim Yar Khan, According to the reliable sources and Market Heads, Telenor is conveying a message to their retailers about the competition, which is all about targeting the other Cellular Network users to shift to Telenor. In this Regard they have announced five prizes of motor bikes for its retailers, and 3 motor bikes for its Retail Sales Officers. Company has also announced that Rs. 25 will be given to the retailers for every MNP in addition to the chance to win Motor Bikes.

The retailers will have to register every number they convert to Telenor by dedicated number 668 by sending SMS. In this way Telenor will update the retailer database. In its first phase, this Campaign will start from 25 Feb and will continue till 25 April. Every Frenchise is given a target of converting 30,000 numbers. The suburbs are targeted specially in this campaign where customers are finding difficulties in using other cellular Networks. The Main focus is on the retailers and opinion leaders in the suburbs of the city and neighboring villages which forms a considerable amount of customer base.

Now the catch is that you can’t offer any incentive for converting any number from other network to your network through MNP. But we know that Telenor has been silently convincing customers to get on-board through between the line messages.

It is obvious that going sensible is wiser than to go Aggressive!

The Reasons behind launching this campaign are:-

-Due to paisa War between Cellular Companies, it is more sensible to get cusotmers of other network than the new one

-Saturation of Cellular Market

-New customers are reluctant to enter due to new PTA SIM Registration Regulations.

-This campaign will not only add your customers, but it will also reduce other network customers at the same time

Objectives of this Campaign

-Increase customers, and hence the revenues

-Converting more registered people to Telenor’s network will play a pivotal role in increasing the Share.

Nokia Siemens Networks bridges the gap between prepaid and postpaid

Launches 'charge@once unified' and 'charge@once business' to enable operators to put their customers first.

The leading mobile prepaid and charging supplier, Nokia Siemens Networks, has launched 'charge@once unified' and 'charge@once business' as part of its convergent Unified Charging and Billing solution that offers service providers the flexible and personalized service approach essential to driving revenues in a competitive market place.

One vital way for service providers to improve customer experience and generate more revenue is to make sure money related issues are carefree and customer care is fast and efficient.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Unified Charging and Billing offers one modular solution for prepaid charging and postpaid billing as well as customer care.
It enables service providers to offer their customers service and price plans based on personal preferences. Improved customer service allows for customers to have easy access to accurate information about their service usage and costs via an online account view – irrespective of their payment method.

The solution also provides the flexibility and cost transparency that customers need to take up new services. "This is the next generation of convergent charging and billing.

For the first time, the two domains come together as one productized solution that makes the service providers' processes and daily operations faster, easier to manage and more cost-efficient," said Juhani Hintikka, Head of Operations and Business Software, Nokia Siemens Networks.

"We have calculated together with a customer that a medium size operator in a growth market could grow an additional 4-5 percent annually in EBITDA over a five year period thanks to Unified Charging and Billing alone. It is a solution founded on our strong track record of prepaid systems and deep understanding of customer needs."

The modular Unified Charging and Billing solution allows service providers to gradually upgrade their existing charging and billing systems as it clearly separates the telecommunications specific charging and billing functions and the enterprise and financial processes into two layers, thus simplifying today's scattered billing and charging architecture.

The core of the solution is the charging and billing software, 'charge@once unified', which is based on the market-leading Nokia Siemens Networks charging and rating engine and converged data model.

It is complemented by 'charge@once business', which provides pre-integrated, converged customer care, financials and reporting functionality.
Nokia Siemens Networks has embedded its partner's market leading customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications in the charge@once business for flexible integration into the service providers' operational environment.

Nokia Siemens Networks also provides the consulting and systems integration capabilities to implement the Unified Charging and Billing solution.
With the cumulated experience of over 500 systems integration projects delivered globally, Nokia Siemens Networks' Services business has a proven track record in bringing together increasingly complex combinations of business models, processes, technologies, systems and software.

In fact, Nokia Siemens Networks supports service provider business applications during their complete life cycle, including maintenance and outsourcing services

KARACHI (February 18 2009): Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation Ltd (PTCL) has announced a new wireless broadband service for its subscribers in Karachi from February 22. Addressing a luncheon meeting with the members of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati), the Executive Vice President PTCL Abdul Baseer said that the new service would be called Evolution Data Optimisation (EVDO) and provide better and fast DSL service to its subscribers.

He informed that there is no consideration to declare local call free. He said that PTCL's revenue has dropped to almost half from Rs 36 billion during last fiscal year. He said that this was due to the de-regularisation policy of the government. He said that PTCL would also announce some new packages to its subscribers very soon.

Baseer said that PTCL has funds available in millions of rupees for the repair of 3 million cables in the city and to improve its infrastructure in Karachi but the permission for digging up portions of the roads from the City District Government (CDGK) is yet to be accorded. He assured that as soon as CDGK gives permission work would be started.

Replying to the demand by the Kati chief Mian Zahid Husain, he said that PTCL would soon set up a special cell at the Kati premises to resolve problems of the Kati members at a fast track. He said that the PTCL always considers to solve business community's problems on priority basis and would welcome all the suggestions in this regard. He said that the huge number of employees is the biggest burden on PTCL but the corporation is not considering any downsizing at this point.

Earlier Chairman Kati Mian Zahid Husain in his welcome address suggested the PTCL to set up a special cell at the Kati premises to address day-to-day complaints of the Kati industrialists. He further proposed that a performance report of this cell should also be submitted to him on weekly basis. He offered every possible help from Kati in this regard.

He said that Korangi industrial area is contributing Rs 270 million per day to the national exchequer and telecommunications plays a major role in the business activities and due to the reason industrialists are in dire need of uninterrupted telecommunications facilities especially DSL. He said that PTCL should provide fax and desired number facility in its V-phone service. The Parton in chief, Kati, S M Muneer in his address, said that the country's economy would remain in crisis during entire 2009 fiscal year.

He said that PTCL was the only privatised corporation which has improved its performance during last year. He, however said there is something wrong in the PTCL at the lower level which should be looked into. He pointed out that PTCL contractors leave dug up streets unattended due to which the industrialists have to face difficulties. Chairman, PTCL Committee Kati, Shahid Qureshi also spoke on the occasion.-PR

Braintel’s License cancelled by PTA

Pin It Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has suspended Bratin Tel’s License under section 23 of the act. PTA in its determination said that braintel was violating terms and conditions of the license, furthermore, PTA said that it reserves its right to impose a penalty equivalent to the amount of loss the licensee has incurred to the national exchequer through aforesaid violation of the terms and conditions.
Determination said that PTA, through the Traffic Monitoring Facility, noted that Braintel unauthorizedly originated 450,814 international telephony minutes (accounting for 65,482 international telephony calls) and terminated those minutes in different countries through IP address 119.63.130.98 by using SIP over non-standard port 8891 from 14th May, 2008 to 30th June, 2008. Furthermore, it has also unauthorizedly terminated 2,442,779 international telephony minutes (accounting for 339,917 international telephone calls) in Pakistan through IP address 119.63.130.98 by using SIP over non-standard port 8891.
Determination said that Braintel has been using its locally allocated numbers for the Lahore Region (N/S) outside Pakistan by misusing Direct Inward Dialing technique and by mapping its numbers against IP addresses, hence, these numbers are being used globally and more than 50,000 customers of the Braintel were using these numbers in around 77 countries.
PTA had issued Braintel a show-cause notice back on October 15th, 2008; however, company didn’t stop violating the rules defined by the authority.

The Paisa War is @ Peak Now

Pin It During last two weeks, we can sense the growing competition reaching a level where cellcos’ are fighting for Paisas now and everyone is claiming lowest call rates.

Zong Aims to beat the Big One

We know that Zong is engaging Mobilink from Day one. In its most recent move, it has responded to Mobilink’s 68 Paisa package in a punching way. Zong’s way of TVC is a matter of threat for Mobilink - Zong’s 65 Paisa TVC literally smashed Mobilink’s 68 Paisa campaign.
Despite the fact that current economic situation doesn’t allow low pricing but we know that this doesn’t matter much for Chinese and they beat the competition with low rates.

No SamJhota… A Move Overshadowed

When Mobilink introduced its No Samjhota TVC, it didn’t seem like that others will attack this campaign specifically. But due to extensive campaign, not only on electronic but also in print and outdoor mediums, we quickly saw a reaction.

Lately, Mobilink is playing its coverage campaign; I believe the only thing left with Mobilink to advertise – which is in fact a good strategy to remain in the eyes without investing much on packages.

Ufone 3 Minute Package

At this time, Ufone is airing 3 TVCs on different TV channels, which include coverage, dormant connections and 3 minute package campaigns.
I would like to appreciate the theme of 3 minute TVC. Campaigns’ closeness with nature and song “Ab tu Aadit c hay 3 Minute Baat Kernay ki” is buzzing the customers.

Telenor Persona

Telenor is on with its classy, delicate and impressive post-paid campaign. In the race of post-paid, Telenor is enjoying competition less environment, and one can easily assume that they will capture handful amount of share in post-paid segment.

Warid has nothing to offer.

At a time when we have heard a good financial support for Warid from its parent company, you may wonder that they Warid is out of this competition. When Zong, Telenor, Mobilink and Ufone are fighting hard to secure their customers and business Warid is enjoying deep sleep. We know that they have consumed their advertising budget though badly planned campaigns earlier last year.
